Meditation has been part of the human experience for millennia. When we think of meditation, we often think of mindfulness meditation or various forms of yoga. All these traditions are either develop out of or based upon Eastern religious practices.
What is often forgotten is that the West also has a 2000-year-old tradition of a meditation as wide ranging as what has been developed in the East, there are many similarities in both traditions. And so, there are forms of Mindfulness meditations; chants or single word prayers – like the Jesus prayer amongst others.

One form of meditation that is particular to western forms of meditation is Lectio Divina, literately meaning ‘holy reading’. Lectio Divina takes as starting point inspirational texts either holy scripture from a faith tradition or any other inspirational text. This form of meditation focuses on words and more recently, image and inter-act with this to find stillness. The text is read very slowly for a while, the image is observed closely to find the ‘voice’ in both text or image. This often leads to quietness and ‘just being’.
